The story of Seidensticker shirts
It's a bit like the beginning of a story in a novel told today: born in a back room or a garage. In 1919, Walter Seidensticker Senior started producing shirts in a small room in his parents' house. A loan of 5000 marks enabled him to start production. Within a year he had repaid the loan and was already able to achieve sales of 70,000 marks and the Seidensticker brand was born.
Just five years later, Seidensticker's shirt workshop had developed into a veritable textile factory. More than 150 seamstresses and sewers worked on the production of shirts in a modern workshop organized along synchronized production lines. Seidensticker thus took a revolutionary step for the textile world: the industrialization of the tailoring process. The division of labor led to greater efficiency and a sharp increase in production. By 1938, the manufacturer was already producing more than one million shirts per year and was able to further expand these quantities after the end of the war. Even in the post-war years and up to the present day, Seidnsticker remained a family-run company.
Today, Frank Seidensticker, who belongs to the third generation of the family, manages the brand together with his nephew Gerd Oliver Seidensticker. To this day, Seidentsicker ranks as the second largest German shirt manufacturer with annual sales of just under 200 million euros and is also represented internationally by men's outfitters in many countries.
The Seidensticker success story after the war
The rapidly growing prosperity after the end of World War II led to an increasing consumer demand for branded clothing and designer labels. Seidensticker skillfully and innovatively embraced this market environment and introduced several innovative and successful labels to the market during the years of the German economic miracle, including the "Toplin" cotton shirt with the blue dot, the "Matchtown" nylon shirt and, in the late 1960s, the "Schwarze Rose" shirt label. At the same time, Seidensticker drove efficiency in production by building innovative production sites, also at international locations, and was thus a globally respected pioneer in the market for shirt producers. Especially the introduction of the brand Schwarze Rose in 1968 by Gerd Seidensticker, shirts made of an innovative fabric called "Diolen Star", ensured Seidensticker high revenues and success for many years. Thus, "Schwarze Rose" became the most successful shirt brand of the post-war period. There was actually no fashion-conscious consumer who did not own a Schwarze Rose shirt from Seidensticker from the 1970s onwards.
Where does Seidensticker have its production carried out?
Since 2015, the Seidensticker Group has been a member of the "Alliance for Sustainable Textiles" and is also involved in the steering committee of the Alliance for the sustainable improvement of social, economic and ecological conditions along the entire supply chain of the textile and apparel sector. Seidensticker generated total revenues of 205 million euros in the 2014/2015 financial year (previous year: 194 million euros). With 2,800 employees at 16 locations, the company produces over 14 million items a year, which are sold in over 80 countries worldwide. This corresponds to an export ratio of 39%.
