Flannel shirts - how to wash them properly?

Manufacturers often state that flannel shirts can be machine washed at 40 degrees without any problems. However, we recommend washing 100% cotton flannel shirts and blouses at 30 degrees. To retain the soft feel typical of flannel shirts even after repeated washing, we also recommend adding a suitable fabric softener. Ideally, hang the flannel shirt outdoors to dry. If this is not possible, flannel shirts are often suitable for a gentle programme in the tumble dryer. Please always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the sewn-in label.

What is flannel fabric in shirts?

Flannel is a textile made from loosely spun yarn (with a linen or twill weave). Cotton is used to make the fabric, which is roughened on one or both sides. Increasingly, a synthetic thread is also woven into flannel shirts to prevent excessive pilling. Unfortunately, the synthetic thread in flannel can sometimes cause some static buildup. Flannel originated in Wales, where it has been made since the 17th century and is becoming increasingly popular today.

What is the advantage of flannel shirts over other shirts?

For many men, the flannel shirt is the favorite in the closet. The reason lies in their special nature, Because flannel shirts have some advantages over other shirts, which can be summarized in the following points:

  •     Warmth: flannel is a particularly warm material and is therefore especially suitable for cold days.
  •     Comfort: flannel is soft and cuddly and feels comfortable against the skin.
  •     Breathability: flannel is a natural material that can absorb and evaporate moisture well, making it a good choice for active people.
  •     Durability: flannel shirts are very sturdy and durable, so they can be worn for a long time without losing shape or color.
  •     Styling: flannel shirts have a casual and comfortable look and are available in many different colors and patterns, which makes them versatile and easy to combine.

Besides classic lumberjack flannel shirts, are there also business flannel shirts?

Although among the flannel shirts are particularly known warming, thick lumberjack shirts, there are also flannel shirts that are suitable for business. These shirts usually have a slimmer cut and lower fiber density, which makes them lighter and smoother. They often come in darker colors and plain patterns and bear some resemblance to other business shirts, such as oxford shirts. These shirts can be worn well with a suit and tie, making them suitable for more formal occasions.

The history of flannel

According to the fashion history book, flannel is made from loosely spun and roughened yarn. Due to the roughening, the threads are slightly broken and lie more parallel. Nowadays, flannel is mainly made of cotton, wool and synthetic threads. Flannel has been worn by Welsh peasants since the 17th century. The slightly thicker shirts were nice and warm and protected the farmers while working in the fields. Since then, flannel shirts have been worn by many workers - the working class - as a good and affordable alternative that lasts a long time. The word "flannel" probably comes from the word "gwlanen," meaning "woolen article." Hamilton Carhartt is sometimes credited with bringing flannel into modern fashion. His fashion company visited all the workers on the site to find out what clothing was most appropriate: the result was the flannel shirt.

Flannel and checks

Make a statement with our fashionable flannel shirts. Flannel shirts are often associated with tartan or lumberjack blouses. In the 80s and 90s, stimulated by the protagonists of the grunge scene like Curt Cobain, there was a real hype about these plaid flannel shirts, both for men and women. With a collection of plaid patterns and easy-to-match colors, a flannel design is still exactly what your casual look needs today.
